"SHIFT (Bad Hombre Vol II)”

Warner Bros Records has released "SHIFT (Bad Hombre Vol II)”. The much-anticipated recording features Sanchez collaborating with an amazing cast of guest artists:

Dave Matthews, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, Meshell Ndegeocello, Kimbra, Lila Downs, Ana Tijoux, Thana Alexa, Silvana Estrada, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Maro, Pat Metheny, SONICA, Becca Stevens and Ignacio Lopez Tarso. SHIFT is a collection of songs from a spectrum of international singer-songwriters Sanchez greatly admires — artists who entrusted Sanchez with their recordings for him to reimagine and “shift” through his genre-bending talents as a composer, multi-instrumentalist, mixer and producer. Among the most influential and versatile drummers in the world, Sanchez also provides the background vocals and plays all the instruments.

Social justice was at the forefront of the first Bad Hombre project released in 2017 because of the rhetoric Donald Trump had used about Mexicans for his candidacy run.
SHIFT presents a more hopeful side of the world while still touching on the fragility of our current social and political climate.

Sanchez has now adapted the term Bad Hombre as an alter ego in which allows him to experiment without any stylistic boundaries.

Screen Shot 2020-12-07 at 6.19.12 PM.png — ONA, the new album by Thana Alexa was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Jazz Vocal Album Category and Regina Carter’s amazing violin solo were nominated for Best Improvised Solo on Pachamama, also from ONA!
I am incredibly proud of Thana (for those who don’t know, she happens to be my wife) because I was there from the early stages of development of the material and was witness to the endless hours of hard work, love and spirit that went into it from the first day to the last.
I had the pleasure of performing on it and co-producing it alongside Thana. Please listen to it if you haven’t. You won’t regret it.

From Thana: ONA is the musical expression of what being a woman means to me. It is my discovery of the wild woman spirit within me and the experiences I’ve encountered in setting her free. It celebrates the inspirational women in my life who have given me the confidence to realize my truth and express it freely. This music tells the story of what I’ve learned about the lives of women – starting with my own – our experiences, our emotions, our sexuality, our worth, our desire for freedom and our ability to overcome injustice by fighting for what we believe in.

Here’s a glance into the making of ONA.

Another exciting piece of news is that the brand new album of the Trio Grande collective with Gilad Hekselman and Will Vinson just came out on Whirlwind records. It was voted one the best albums of 2020 in Downbeat Magazine. Trio Grande is a powerful new creative collaboration of three leading New York performer/composers: Will Vinson (saxophones/keyboards), Gilad Hekselman (guitars) and Antonio Sanchez (drums) present a set of wildly varied compositions, creating a wide and colorful spectrum of sound and expression, and in the process reinvent the roles of the trio in improvised music. The music is available in physical form on CD and special double LP edition, the latter containing three bonus tracks, including the trio’s interpretation of compositions by Charlie Haden and John Lennon.

I’m very excited to share the new Bad Hombre Short Film which with the incredible Lombard Twins (who are two of the most innovative dancers in the tap/hip hop scene) . The way this video came to be… The twins called me and told me they really like the title track from my 2017 album Bad Hombre and they would really like to create a dance piece with it. I was thrilled with the idea and gave them the green light, of course.

We did the shoot in Los Angeles in one day and the twins did all the postproduction

Also Thana and I shot a video of my composition “Home” from the album “Lines in the Sand” in a duo performance at our home studio. Thana wrote the beautiful lyrics for it.
